Benefits of Installing Beaver Dam Levelers

beavers, Blog

Beavers are fascinating animals, they are adept swimmers and skilled engineers. They can build elaborate dams which serve as pantries for food storage, and to create ponds which offer them refuge from predators. These dams are magnificent feats of construction but they can cause significant flooding issues to property. We have a proven solution for allowing continued animal habitat while reducing the risk of flooding — Beaver Dam Levelers.

What is a Beaver Dam Leveler?

A Beaver Dam Leveler is a system designed to manage the water levels in areas impacted by beaver dams. Levelers are typically constructed with a pipe installed through the beaver dam to control the flow of water. The system helps mitigate flooding of nearby roads, fields, or structures.

To ensure continuous water flow, the pipe is often designed with a protective filter at the intake end. The filter prevents debris and  beavers from blocking or clogging the system.

By regulating water levels instead of removing the dam, a Beaver Dam Leveler allows the beavers to remain in the area. Beavers provide important ecosystem benefits including wetland creation and improved water quality.

How Do Beaver Dam Levelers Work?

Beaver dam levelers work by:

  • Regulating water flowing through and around beaver dams.
  • Allowing water to slowly drain through beaver dams, preventing flooding while allowing the beavers to stay where they are.
  • Allowing water to flow at a controlled rate, preventing water levels from rising too high behind the dam.
